The next day, 14 May, the squadron was right back in the thick of things, led by W/C Truscott. Four aircraft were again providing escort to 489 Squadron torpedo-carrying Hampdens on a rover patrol when the patrol sighted a merchant vessel flying a barrage balloon and being escorted by two flak ships and a single-engined aircraft. The attacking aircraft spotted a German HA Blohm Voss (BV.138) flying boat circling over the convoy. F/L JT McCutcheon and F/O JL Moore immediately attacked the aircraft. They raked the odd looking plane with cannon and machine gun fire. With two of the three engines on fire, the German flying boat hit the sea. Likely after talking to the pilot, Gower wrote in his diary,
"a 3 engined Blohn and Vass, shot down one of the Hampdens in flames as both engines were seen to be in flames so McCutcheon took after the Jerries and shot them down as the big flying boats was seen to crash into the sea on fire."

7696 While engaged in the action against the BV.138, F/L McCutcheon's aircraft was hit by flak from the escort vessels, setting the port engine nacelle on fire and damaging the undercarriage with the port wheel extended. Even with his aircraft in such a damaged state, he turned to attack two FW.190s ahead of him and they turned to attack in response. McCutcheon flew below the 190s and the enemy aircraft were not seen again. Extinguishing the fire, they returned to the base and made a successful belly landing, completing what the War Record noted as 'a splendid bit of airmanship'. For his efforts, including this action, McCutcheon was awarded the DFC in July, just after he had been promoted to S/L.

Tras el día de ayer, 13 de mayo, hoy volveremos a realizar dos Rover Patrol (misma configuración que en la misión anterior), pero esta vez no nos internaremos en los fiordos (demasiado bien defendidos) sino que buscaremos convoys y barcos solitarios al largo de la costa noruega en toda su extensión. Se permite atacar a cualquier buque de guerra o transporte, o que abra fuego contra uds.
Mientras tanto, los Catalina realizarán una patrulla ASW en el área indicada.
Conocen ya los riesgos de aproximarse a las principales bases de la Luftwaffe. También es posible tropezar con aparatos enemigos en patrulla o escolta de buques a lo largo de sus principales derrotas costeras.
La mitad de los Beauforts disponibles (I/489º) despegarán de BANFF en pista 04 desde área de dispersión Oeste (izquierda de la 04) reuniéndose con aparatos del 404º en el acostumbrado área de reunión (B-3). Desde allí volarán hacia su zona asignada de búsqueda y destrucción (ver mapa). Al regresar tomarán en la misma pista y estacionarán en plataforma central ("M").
La otra mitad (II/489ª) se dirigirá a PETERHEAD para reunirse con los aparatos del 235ºSqn (Black Rover Patrol). Al finalizar aterrizarán en misma pista estacionando en misma plataforma.
Los aparatos del 404ºSqn acudirán al área de reunión para junto al I/489º realizar la White Rover Patrol indicada en el mapa. Despegarán de PETERHEAD en pista 36 desde plataforma S4. Aterrizarán en misma pista estacionando en N3.
Beaufighters del 235ºSqn despegarán en pista 36 de PETERHEAD desde plataforma S4, reuniéndose sobre dicho aeródromo con el II/489º para ejecutar su misión. Al regresar tomarán en pista 36 estacionando en S4.
Los líderes de vuelo serán los responsables del 404º y del 235º respectivamente para cada Rover Patrol.
Los Catalina del 190ºSqn se hallan ya en el aire, a 3000 pies en C-7 sector 7, rumbo NNE. Deben buscar y destruir cualquier sumergible enemigo en el área indicada. Los mismos a menudo son escoltados a su regreso a Noruega por alguna lancha rápida o hidroavión. Carga a discreción de líder Mirlo.
